Welcome Dr. Steve McLaughlin, the New Superintendent!

 July 2021

Reports from The Washington Post describes how many school superintendents are retiring from their post as “[they] have worked 15 hours a day, seven days a week” during the pandemic (The Washington Post). The AASA, the School Superintendents Association, details that this year has had an unprecedented turnover as a result of the burnout, stress, and workload associated with the job.

Our very own superintendent, Dr. Scott Scambray, whose daughter has just graduated from Sonora, is similarly retiring. Our beloved superintendent is retiring on June 30 from his position at the Fullerton Joint Union High School District, where he will be succeeded by Dr. Steve McLaughlin.

For starters, our new superintendent has taught for 20 years, has been an activities director and administrator, middle school principal, and more. Coming from the Fountain Valley School District, Dr. McLaughlin was the assistant superintendent of Educational Services and has been crucial within his district in moving forwards during the pandemic.

Having obtained a doctorate from USC in addition to his previous qualifications, he will be approved by the Boards of Trustees in this week’s meeting. Dr. McLaughlin is recognized for his experience and effective communication; he forms cooperative and efficient relationships with a priority on helping all students, believing each person deserves an equal chance to succeed.

Now, is this what our district needs?

Undeniably, YES! The district has been thorough and dutiful in making sure the needs of our students and teachers are met and has interviewed many figures throughout the district alongside the implementation of online surveys in finding the perfect candidate for the job.

The ASB Presidents from each school of the district were offered to be interviewed for what they sought after in the new superintendent. In the meeting I was invited to, the consensus was that we needed a leader who could move forwards through COVID, form closer relationships with students on campuses, and communicate effectively-- the student body wants a superintendent that will make sure each student is represented, and the district is confident McLaughlin will fulfill his job.

Staff and teachers were asked for input, as well as other voices deemed essential for additional consideration. Our Board President Marilyn Buchi and Board Clerk Lauren Klatzker would visit Fountain Valley to confirm Dr. McLaughlin’s experience and character with stakeholders.
