Billie Eilish is shocking her fans with a dramatic transformation.

Starting her music career at just 13 years old, Billie Eilish rose to fame with her hit single “Ocean Eyes,” which took the internet by storm. Since then, she continues making history, all the way up to her latest release, “Lost Cause,” a single which marked the beginning of her new era of music based off her new album Happier Than Ever.

From the beginning of her career in 2015, Eilish’s music was popularly known to focus on mental illness, relating to many young teens who face the same struggles with depression, anxiety, and even more. With this, Billie Eilish rose to fame, continuing to produce her trademark melancholy yet relatable style of music. This has always been the persona she created for herself, but now all of that’s changing.

During her When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go tour in early 2020, Eilish opened with a video of herself expressing her body in a way she has never done before, delivering a powerful message about body shaming. Elish began the clip by stating, “You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body,” as she has always worn baggy clothes and covered herself in a way to avoid the possibility of being sexualized and to avoid comments about her body. As she matured and furthered her career, however, she has come to embrace how she feels about her body. On May 2nd, she was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine, revealing a different side to her than her fans had seen before. She expressed a surprisingly feminine, open image of her body, directly contrasting the way she was about this before. Clearly, she has become confident and comfortable in her own skin, alluding to her change in character in her new era. Perhaps this new image she has created for herself has given a sense of confidence and ability to express herself that she didn’t have before.

Eilish’s transformation is also apparent in her music, which has been popularized for its iconic dark and melancholic style. Her new album Happier Than Ever is a stark contest to that original style, putting more emphasis on light rather than darkness, a comparison made obvious by the album covers themselves. Each of these new songs takes a turn on storytelling, each portraying a moment or point in her life, as she expresses her emotions in a vulnerable way, which enables her to convey her deepest feelings. Based on what has already been revealed from her new album, her latest release “Lost Cause” will show a further rise in confidence through her increasingly upbeat take on music, which connects to the way her life feels right now. From her lyrical choices, she has clearly established a happier and more self-assured version of herself.

Perhaps her most symbolic change is in her hair color. Throughout each of her musical eras, she has had her signature dark hairstyles going from blue, black, and green hair. Consequently, now her current color is softer blonde, emphasizing her change in character to a more pure and gentle version of her former self. She nearly broke the internet when she revealed her blonde hair on March 17th, gaining over one million likes in just six minutes: seeing her depicted in this fashion quite clearly shocked her fans, many believing this wasn’t her final look, but the way she has obviously changed begs to differ.

Eilish’s new album is set to be released on July 30th, so what this renewed version of herself brings is yet to be completely known. By the way she has expressed herself recently, however, already shows a huge difference in character and self development. It is unknown whether she will eventually return to her gloomier style of pop music, or if she's permanently turning it around to show a happier music style. The album may be a complete giveaway, but Eilish very well may be Happier Than Ever.
